breadfruit

I have planted over 800 fruit trees here at Sardine Bay over the last few months. Most of them are very small, but the farm has some mature fruit trees too.

This is a breadfruit. It needs to be cooked to eat it, and since I prefer to eat raw foods as much as possible I haven't put in many more. There are 2 kinds, so I put in 3 trees of the other kind.

coconut

Coconut of course! I haven't counted them, but a lot. And a lot of young ones that should be moved. They are growing too close to their parents.

Heart of Palm

Heart of palm. This if Pifa, but heart of palm is better tasting. The palm has a lot of very sharp spines. I'm glad I have people here working for me who know how to strip them off.

Heart of palm tastes much better raw. Cooked has no comparison.

Noni

Noni. I'm sure it is very good for one, but not something that you could just pick and eat. I asked the local Indians how they used it. They told me that they put it in water and ferment it for 3 days. So I did. And then I threw it out!

Pifa

Pifa. It has a lot of small orange fruit with a stone in the centre. It's cooked for about an hour in boiling water. It tastes a lot like the more solid orange winter squashes.

Pifa seed pod

It's a beautiful tree. I'd grow some even if it didn't have edible parts. Here is a new seed pod. It has something like a half coconut above it. Protection from some animal? I don't know.

Toucans love eating both the flowers and the fruit of Pifa. There were 10 or more toucans in the tree eating flowers a few days ago.

water apple

Water Apple or Maranon. In 8 months I have had 2 major crops of fruit and about 6 minor crops. As soon as it's finished ripening one lot of fruit, more red fuzzy flowers come and off it goes again. It's a favourite of humming birds.

The fruit really does look and taste quite a lot like an apple.

mangoes on top of hill

Lots of mangoes!

green coconuts

Green coconuts - Some coconuts are yellow when young and some are green. There are probably more than 2 types of coconut here. Some have a pinkish centre and some don't. But they all taste pretty much the same.
