small coral

There is a lot of coral on the west side of Sardine Bay and almost none on the east side. I think that there is a current in Chiriqui Bay and that it hits the west side of the Bay. Here are some small bits of coral that have washed up on the beach.

Next to the Mangrove on the west side of Sardine Bay you can see the coral in the shallower water.

more small coral

Here are some more small pieces of coral that washed up on the beach. I've found a few small pieces of Staghorn coral growing in the bay. The most obvious coral is brain coral which is plentiful especially at the northwest corner of Sardine Bay. But there are many different varieties and many different colours including some very bright colours! If you swim over them very gently so that they don't close up you can see their 'flowers' open and feeding. But splash around and they all close up.

I do want to emphasise that coral can be killed very easily. Never stand on it! You may kill it that way. And don't touch it with any part of your body. Coral is so beautiful that it would be a shame to destroy it by being careless.
