I went to David a few days ago to buy fruit trees for my Sardine Bay property. On the way back over the continental divide the road was closed due to a large mudslide. Well, I had to wait because I had a truck load of small trees. But those travelling by bus could walk around the slide and the buses were turning around and going the other way. It was a long walk through swampy ground and it got pretty muddy pretty fast. But the bus passengers wanted to get to the other side and were negociating with their bags and babies. The Panamanian version of 'Search and Rescue' were there in force. The next day when we were still waiting we found out that there had been a story about a car caught in the mudslide, but that turned out to not be so. These guys grabbed babies and bags from the bus passengers and took them to the buses on the other side. Then they cut new paths through the swamp when the last one got too muddy and slippery. They were doing this for hours on end. And there are a lot of passengers on buses on a Saturday. Over 100 an hour each way, half of whom are women and probably most of the women have bags and babies. Somebody should give those guys medals! |
